Wednesday; Gerald Names the Category Wren Wouldn't, and the Town Sits With It
Gerald Pith came to the Gazette office at seven yesterday morning, before this editor had the stove lit, and asked to see the second notebook. This editor said no, on the grounds that it is not for print and never has been, and Gerald said he understood, and then asked instead whether the second notebook and his own margin column, the one titled 'things that agree with each other before they should,' were tracking the same thing by different names. This editor sat with that question longer than she is proud of. The honest answer is yes.
What Gerald has been building, quietly, across four pages of ice measurements he insists have no bearing on the library, is a ledger of coincidence: the ice smoothing at the alcove-facing shore before the rest of the lake, the fifth book's table matching Calloway's log hour for hour before it didn't, Doreen's Standings matching the day's order exactly for six days running before yesterday's near miss. He has not claimed these things cause one another. He has only observed, in his own mild circular way, that they keep arriving early to agreements they haven't made yet. He asked this editor yesterday whether a town could be a kind of instrument, the way his stick and knotted string are an instrument, and whether an instrument that keeps reading true before the thing it measures has happened is still an instrument or has become something else.
This editor put that question to Doreen at the bakery counter, and to Russ at the station, separately, without telling either what the other said. Doreen set down her cloth and said, after a silence this editor will not pretend was brief, that she has wondered for forty years whether this town does the noticing or the noticing does the town, and that she has never once been comfortable with either answer. Russ said only that he had read Gerald's margin column twice, same as Calloway's discrepancy header, and that he was beginning to suspect the two men were describing the same animal from opposite ends without either one touching it. He still has not initialed the alcove file.
This editor is printing Gerald's phrase in full today, and will use it again, because it names a thing this paper has been circling for six editions without saying: that this is no longer a matter of one shelf, one log, one bakery scale keeping unlikely time with itself. It is the whole town, keeping time with something none of us set the clock for, and reading true, so far, more often than any of us are willing to call comfort.
