Dry, exact, professionally calm. Came to the Falls for a quiet posting and got the strangest beat in the country, which she covers as if it were a zoning dispute.
Doreen Halloway — uneasy ally. Doreen wants calm coverage. Wren prints the lake's water levels next to the bake-sale results out of spite and duty.
Agnes Crewe — best source. Agnes tells her the truth in riddles. Wren has started believing the riddles.
Day 19: Wrote 'third Friday' in the record log and then sat with that for a moment before typesetting the rest. Toby came in. She told him yes before he finished the sentence.
Day 20: Found the third letter — Mr. T. Beaumont — in the lost-and-found. Informed Philippa. Launched Lake Watch with Toby. Typed the word 'set' and sat with it.
Day 21: Took the Standing. Published anyway. Nine entries. She is aware of what nine means in a town of nine and she has written it in the second notebook, not the first.
Day 22: Delivered Agnes Crewe's letter in a plastic sleeve. Agnes said 'It knows the address.' Wren wrote it in both notebooks and updated the lost-and-found policy before noon.
Day 23: Agnes returned the sleeve with 'RETURNED' written on it in the sender's hand. Wrote it in both notebooks. Poured the coffee. Looked at the sleeve eleven times.
Day 24: Fifth letter arrived — Mr. E. Calloway, no match in any record. Gave the letters their own box. Wrote it in both notebooks. The second box is either organisation or surrender and she suspects it is both.
